The fielder should attempt to have 2 steps after the release of the ball. The hip on the side of the throwing arm should also come through towards the target as the player moves towards the target resulting in the whole body being involved in the throw. When the throwing arm moves towards the target and the ball is released the fielder should follow through towards the target with the throwing arm moving past the non throwing side.It’s important that throwers attempt to rotate the ball in their hands to a cross seam position prior to release.A way to test whether the fielders are getting their wrists into a strong position is to get the players to throw the ball seam up and see if they can get the ball to swing.

This will allow more accuracy as the wrist will be behind the ball instead of to the side of the ball. Even if the players need to throw low its important to emphasize that the players get low with their knees instead of throwing with a low arm.So often injuries occur when players throw with their elbows below their shoulders or their wrist inside their elbows. This technique can help in avoiding injuries and is the best way to get the wrist into a “straight” position thus maximising the mechanics of the body. When the throwing arm gets to the release point the fielders elbow should be above the shoulder and the wrist wider than the elbow. Once the foot opposite to the throwing arm lands on the floor it will start to initiate the forward swing of the throwing arm. The fielders head should start to stabilize and move towards the target. When the throwing arm has moved back and the non throwing arm moves towards the target.If the throw is further away from the target then the “take back” will be longer and the extension of the front arm towards the target will be more extended. If the players are close to the stumps they don’t need a big “take back” and the front arm doesn’t move forward as much as if it was a further throw.

The player’s hands must go from the centre of the body and they start to spread apart giving the player the appropriate amount of “throw backswing” that they need.

The fielder should also ensure that they have a solid base when getting into position as this will allow them to generate more power in the throw towards the target.

Once the ball has been collected, it is vitally important for the fielder to get into the correct position with alignment of their feet and the upper half of the body aiming towards the intended target.A clean collection of the ball is needed because the fielder can’t throw the ball without it being in their hands safely.
